The Problem

Parents often struggle to understand and empathize with their kids’ problems and emotions enough to teach them how to manage them. Identifying their own feelings and communicating with grown-ups can become difficult and uncomfortable.

The Solution

To design a digital product that teaches kids to identify and regulate their own emotions in the moment. In addition, an easy non-verbal form of communication so grown ups understand what kids are going through, and learn how to best support them.

Research

As we conducted our initial research, we found out lots of relevant facts that helped us define the issue we wanted to work on more specifically, as well as who can be affected by the problem.

Target Segmentation Personas

We developed some personas representing our target audience, to understand their behaviors, needs and pain points.

Struggling Teenager
In emotional episodes, I want to help my child regain control of the situation so I can teach them self-regulation skills.
When I am experiencing strong emotions in front of my kid, I want to learn to address the situation in healthy ways, so I can set a good example.
When I’m in a bad place mentally, I want to find ways to manage my emotions effectively so I can move forward.

Idea Generation

Our team went through a very extensive brainstorming process, exploring all facets of this problem we could think of and coming up with interesting and unexpected concepts.

Affinity Map

Most categories were more or less even in amount of ideas, but the ones that had the most coincidences were Parent-Child Communication, Parent Education,  Expressing Emotions & Motivation.

Minimum Viable Product (MVP)

We narrowed down our ideas into 3 to potentially develop, so we analyzed the minimum viable product for each of them, as well as a competitive analysis for inspiration & differentiation of what has been done already that is similar to our concepts.

Competitive Analysis

Our team went through a very extensive brainstorming process, exploring all facets of this problem we could think of and coming up with interesting and unexpected concepts.

Our Concept

Groove uses color psychology to teach kids to identify their emotions in an increasingly specific way, and healthy strategies to manage them.

Parents and teachers use groove to monitor kids’ emotions and be able to support them best. However, adults can use it as well to work on their emotion management and build better non-verbal communication within their family or support system.

Groove can be installed on any wearable device, and links to the app in a smartphone.

REFLECTIONS
My Learnings
  • Identifying needs and ideating a product from zero to solve it in an unexpected way.
  • Developing an abstract concept into a branded digital product.
  • Our team could improve in the separation and organization of different features that we thought out for this product, this can be worked on in the next stages of development.
Next Steps
  • Developing an incentive for the review system, so users are more willing to go through the longer-than-usual process and provide helpful reviews.
  • Developing a way to send recommendations to friends in the app directly and privately.
